More tablets 'may feature cameras'

Handset camera lens manufacturer has announced that it saw a surge in orders last month

A Taiwanese handset camera lens manufacturer has announced that it saw a surge in orders from tablet PC makers last month - suggesting that upcoming devices may feature cameras.

Largan Precision said its revenue rose year-on-year by 52% TWD1.31 billion (£27 million) in March, driven by the surge in orders for tablet cameras.

The company's revenue in March grew month-on-month by 33% - suggesting that the tablet camera interest began last month.

Charles Chiu, a spokesman for Largan, said that the orders are for lenses to go with cameras featuring a resolution of up to five megapixels.

However, Mr Chiu declined to provide details about the number of lens orders the company took last month or who placed them.

Taiwanese companies manufacture many of the portable and tablet PCs sold by famous brands, and use components supplied by local firms. The performance of these local parts makers is indicative of the potential future trends in the PC industry.

While most of the first-generation tablets did not feature cameras, the new development suggests that that may change later this year.
