Sony announces Android tablets

Sony has unveiled two new tablet devices based on the Android 3.0 platform

Sony has unveiled two new tablet devices based on the Android 3.0 platform and designed for gaming and entertainment.

Codenamed S1 and S2, the tablets are expected to arrive some time this autumn, with features including Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity.

Sony has optimised the tablets for connectivity with its gaming service PlayStation Network and media streaming service Qriocity.

The tablets have built-in infrared sensors offering centralised control for multiple home entertainment devices. This feature will initially support Sony's Bravia televisions and later extended to other audio-visual equipment.

The S1 is the larger of the two devices with a 9.4in display so users can "enjoy the web and rich content on a large screen."

According to Sony, its "off-centre of gravity design offers ease of grip as well as a sense of stability and lightness, offering comfortable use for hours".

The 5.5in dual-screen S2 is intended for more mobile users.

Kunimasa Suzuki, Sony corporate executive, said: "Sony Tablet delivers an entertainment experience where users can enjoy cloud-based services on-the-go at any time."
