Tech giant HP announces WebOS plans

WebOS is set to become available on desktop computers

WebOS is set to become available on desktop computers, the operating system's owner Hewlett-Packard (HP) has announced.

At an event in San Francisco, Todd Bradley, head of HP's personal systems group, said the company is looking to expand the reach of the operating system, which is currently used to run its Pre and Pixi Plus smartphones.

"We have a commitment to [take] the platform to other connected devices, including printers and other form factors that you haven't seen before," Bradley said. "I'm excited to announce our plans to bring the WebOS to the device that has the biggest reach of all: the personal computer."

WebOS was originally developed by Palm, which the technology giant bought in July last year for $1.2bn (then worth £788m).

HP then said it would develop WebOS for a variety of devices, including "slate PCs and netbooks", with a view to compete with rival mobile operating systems such as Google's Android and Apple's iOS.
