Lenovo tablet challenge for Apple

Computer systems firm can give Apple "more than a run for its money in China".

Lenovo boss has expressed confidence that the computer systems firm can give Apple "more than a run for its money in China".

The announcement by Liu Chuanzhi, founder and chairman of the China-based PC vendor, comes in the wake of Apple's current success in the growing tablet segment in the country's market.

However, Mr Chuanzhi says that thriving in China might be difficult for Apple, adding: "They have fans all over the world. [But] the Lenovo brand is a powerful brand in China. I'm confident that we will give Apple more than a run for its money in China."

He also explained that the overall PC market is heading towards a major overhaul.

Mr Chuanzhi said: "The tablet will assume a fairly dominant position among computer users in the future."

According to the latest report from IDC, Lenovo is the leading PC vendor in China with about 29% share of total shipments - up year-on-year from 26.5% - followed by Dell with 10%, and HP with 9%.

Lenovo also currently dominates the Asia Pacific PC market with a 22% share of total shipments as of the fourth quarter of 2010, up from 20.6% year-over-year, according to preliminary IDC data.
