£7.2m internet project announced

A project to "revolutionise the internet" has been announced by the Government

A project to "revolutionise the internet" by creating new devices and materials to improve bandwidth has been announced by the Government.

The "Photonics HyperHighway" project will see experts from the University of Southampton and BBC R&D join forces to enhance how the internet currently works.

The six-year project, which is a £7.2 million investment, will partly be funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council.

Its project leader will be Professor David Payne, director of Southampton University's Optoelectronics Research Centre.

Professor Payne said: "Now is the time to look ahead to develop the UK infrastructure of the future. Our ambition is nothing less than to rebuild the internet hardware to suit it to the needs of 21st-century Britain.

David Willetts, minister for universities and science, added: "The Photonics HyperHighway project has the potential to truly revolutionise the internet, making it much faster and more energy-efficient.

"The project is also a shining example of the UK's world-leading role in this area of research, and I look forward to the exciting breakthroughs it will bring."
