Corporates 'key to tablet success'

Qualcomm believes tablets will only truly nail the computing market if they succeed in the money-making enterprise sector

The permanence of tablets will depend on how well they do in the corporate market, Qualcomm vice president of business development Terry Yen said in an interview with the Inquirer.

He pointed out that corporate sales have traditionally accounted for the bigger share of PC revenues although the consumer market leads in terms of number of units sold.

However, he believes a sea-change could take place in the adoption of tablets if the content creating tools on future devices catch up with their impressive display functionality.

Qualcomm is exploring the possibility of creating processors for tablets that can be used in schools as low cost substitutes for text-books, and as useful aid for medical workers, Mr Yen added.

However, rival chip maker ARM has little doubts about the potential of tablet devices. The firm's president Tudor Brown said earlier that "tablets are changing the computing landscape forever".
