Intel launches new 'ultrabook'

Intel is hoping to stem the invasion of tablets into the PC market by combining the best features of both in a new class of systems called the "ultrabook"

At a trade show in Taiwan, the chip maker unveiled the super-light Ultrabook, which weighs in at around two pounds and has a display size of 11.6in.

Powered by an Intel processor and featuring a high-capacity solid state drive, the aluminium-encased laptop offers near instant switch-on facility.

Intel China's new boss Sean Maloney launched the notebook, which bears similarities to the MacBook Air and could be a market rival to Apple's device.

When Apple introduced the ultra-light system in October last year, chief Steve Jobs said he expected MacBook Air to be the "future of laptops".

At the Computex show, Intel said: "[Ultrabooks] will marry the performance and capabilities of today's laptops with tablet-like features and deliver a highly responsive and secure experience, in a thin, light and elegant design."
