Android app support for PlayBook

Research In Motion (RIM) has confirmed that its upcoming tablet will support Android applications

Research In Motion (RIM) has confirmed that its upcoming tablet will support Android applications in addition to Java and native OS apps.

The company said that while the new development does not bring all the features of Android on to the BlackBerry PlayBook, it will allow developers to give a dual platform exposure to their apps.

It said that a software development kit (SDK) for the app players are set to be released shortly, and developers will need to re-submit their applications for approval.

Users of the forthcoming device will also be able to download applications coded for other platforms from the BlackBerry App World using optional app players.

Mike Lazaridis, co-CEO, RIM, said: "The BlackBerry PlayBook is an amazing tablet. The power that we have embedded creates one of the most compelling app experiences available in a mobile computing device today."

The device will only be able to run apps created for Android 2.3 and above.
