Two release tracks for Google apps

Google has created two separate release tracks on its Apps suite

IT administrators will now have the choice of installing new Google apps as soon as they are released or after testing them for a few days.

Google has created two separate release tracks on its Apps suite. The "rapid release" track gives access to Google's latest features immediately as they arrive.

A second "scheduled release" track puts out new products in a weekly cycle every Tuesday. Google says this would give administrators time to familiarise themselves and their companies with the new interface and functions before the tools are installed on systems.

IT managers will get a week's notice about the new app once it debuts on the rapid release track, and the dual channel system will apply across Google's services including Gmail, Contacts, Calendar, Docs and Sites.

Google made the announcement in a blog post, saying: "We're always excited to bring you the newest features as soon as they're ready, but we've heard from some customers with complex IT environments that they'd like more notice before new features are deployed to their users.

"To address these requests, we're happy to announce a new feature release process aimed at helping you balance the benefits of accessing improvements as soon as they're ready with the task of integrating the changes into your organisation."
