Smartphone quarterly sales up 80%

Worldwide smartphone sales during the first quarter of 2011 were nearly 80% higher

Worldwide smartphone sales during the first quarter of 2011 were nearly 80% higher than the same period last year, new figures show.

Research group IDC said around 99.6 million smartphones were sold around the world during the first three months of the year, as the market experiences a "perfect storm" driving its growth.

Nokia remained the overall leader, selling 24.2 million handsets and claiming a 23.4% share of the market.

It recorded particularly strong performances in the EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) and Asia Pacific regions.

However, runner-up Apple was closing in on the Finnish maker with estimated sales of 18.7 million units, giving it an 18.7% market share.

IDC said the Nokia's decision to move from Symbian operating system to Windows Phone may backfire, enabling rivals such as Apple to narrow the gap further.

The global smartphone market looks set for continued growth thanks to the rapid improvements in technology and efforts by handset makers to redesign their products with new features and lower prices to reach a wider customer base, the report said.
