Lenovo to roll out tablet in June

Technology giant Lenovo has announced it will launch its first tablet computer LePad

Technology giant Lenovo has announced it will launch its first tablet computer, LePad, in the domestic Chinese market in March, before rolling it out across the world in June.

The PC manufacturer heralded its arrival in the emerging tablet and smartphone market by unveiling the product last month at the Consumer Electronics Show.

The new offering boasts a 10.1-inch screen and a 1.2GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor. It is run on Google's mobile operating software Android 2.2 OS.

Lenovo, which is one of the top four PC brands globally, has been recently focussing on strengthening its foothold in the smartphone and tablet market.

In January, a new business unit was created by the firm, which is the dominant tech force in China, to look after the development of these products.

The move comes as the company's rivals, including Hewlett-Packard, are also looking to exploit the tablet PC market.

Research firm Gartner revealed that around 54.8 million tablets will be shipped in 2011, marking an 181% rise compared to the previous year.
