No plans to open up servers: RIM

No plans to extend the use of its servers to mobile devices other than BlackBerry

Research In Motion (RIM) says it currently has no plans to extend the use of its servers to mobile devices other than BlackBerry.

RIM's BlackBerry Enterprise Servers are at the centre of the company's mobile communications solutions for business users.

Corporate BlackBerry users can access all networked data and emails from outside their workplace through these servers installed on site.

It has been suggested that RIM could gainfully utilise them for offering connectivity to other mobile devices including iPhones, iPads and Android-based smartphones.

However, RIM's senior vice-president for software and business services Jim Tobin made it clear that is unlikely to happen any time soon.

He said: "Our answer right now is we don't need to do that. That doesn't close the door to later bridging out into other things, but it's not the right focus for us right now."

RIM is poised to release its PlayBook tablet computer which it hopes will enjoy the kind of success that BlackBerry has with enterprise customers.

"Our strength lies in that enterprises want to get more mobile ... we're pure in that pursuit," he added.
