Macs hit by fake security software

Security experts are warning internet users to be wary of a malicious program doing the rounds disguised as an anti-virus software for Apple computers.

Called the MACDefender and Mac Security, the software causes pornographic images to display on infected systems.

According to ZDNet's Ed Bott, hundreds of users who installed the program are now seeking help on Apple forums to remove it.

MACDefender is said to have sprung up some time early this month and having been widely circulated and installed since its release, it now comes up high on search engine results.

Sophos security consultant Graham Cluley said MACDefender uses a scare and install tactic and has been linked by its creators to common, harmless phrases used on the search engine.

He said: "You search for something on Google Images, and when you click on an image you are taken to a webpage which serves up the attack - regardless of whether you are running Mac OS X or Windows."
