SMEs 'careful about cloud adoption'

84% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have already used at least one cloud-based application

Despite being concerned about adopting the cloud computing system, 84% of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have already used at least one cloud-based application.

Most SMEs do not see themselves as adopters of cloud computing even though they use cloud-based technology such as email services, according to a new CDW poll.

CDW revealed that 73% out of those who called themselves full-blown cloud users made their first move into cloud computing by implementing a single application.

David Cottingham, senior director of managed services at CDW, said: "Many organisations are carefully - and selectively - moving into cloud computing, as well they should, because it represents a significant shift in how computing resources are provided and managed."

He added that SMEs are attracted by the convenient, mobile, on-demand access to applications that the technology provides, helping firms further improve their flexible working practices.

Recently, ERP chief executive officer Anthony Chirchirillo told Automation World that cloud computing was helping businesses go global as they no longer require an endless supply of capital to get the latest IT infrastructure solutions.
