Samsung and LG have both revealed plans to develop future tablet devices with high-density LCD screens

Samsung and LG have both revealed plans to develop future tablet devices with high-density LCD screens, indicating that the next round of tablets could have an iPhone4-style 'retina' display.

One of the most distinct features of Apple's iPhone 4 when it first launched was its high-resolution display.

At 960x640 resolution and measuring 3.5in diagonally, the screen boasts a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch - making it one of the highest resolution displays on a portable device to date.

But now, both the Korean electronic giants have announced developments that could mean the iPad 3 gets the long-awaited feature.

In separate announcements, the companies have declared that they would be showing prototype tablet-friendly high-density displays at the SID 2011 event next week.

Samsung has claimed that its 2650x1600 300ppi 10.1in display will be ready for commercial use before the end of the year.

Higher pixel densities will guarantee more impressive graphics on future tablets but they come at a price as the processing power within the tablets will have to increase if more pixels are put on the screen at once.
